In 1864, the British Parliament passed the Contagious Disease Acts, which attempted to regulate prostitution in hopes of protecting their troops from sexually transmitted infections, then known as venereal diseases. However, the public, the medical community, and the military all had different opinions on whether or not these acts were effective, and more importantly, whether or not they were ethical.
For today’s episode, we are going to give our post-mortem on the goth scene in 2018. We’ll also be discussing where we stand on the proposition of defining goth including the major contentions and schools of thought around that issue. We’ll review the new album from Ghostland offer our sinister suggestions and more!

Typhoid Mary is a term used to describe someone who spreads disease. Many people know the name refers to a real woman, but not many know the details of her story. World renowned thereminist, Armen Ra discusses his life as a young Armenian having moved from Iran in the late 70s and starting his life in America after a permanent holiday stay. Armen’s musical career came later in life after many years of clubbing in the era of the Club Kids in NYC, performing spectacular drag shows, making jewellery for stars like Siouxsie Sioux and studying witchcraft with the witch of Salem herself, Laurie Cabot. Armen also worked in Patricia Field’s (widely known as costume designer for Sex and the City) store at one point and shops at the NYC store Trash and Vaudeville to buy all of his pointed shoes and boots. It was only until one day after attending a party hosted by David LaChapelle, someone asked Armen what he did apart from model, to which he quipped, “I’m studying the theremin”. The words were spoken and although untrue at the time, became his destiny. In 2014 a documentary was made dedicated to Armen’s life titled ‘When my Sorrow Died’. It won multiple awards and is still being circulated and available for download in the link below.
Armen has performed around the world in places like Villa Petraia (Florence, Italy) and at events such as the Christian Dior Haute Couture Ball (Paris), being on tour with Nick Cave, Moogfest and many other events that are at the height of obscurity when it comes to electronic music and the theremin. Armen’s gothic influence he describes as organic and makes no excuses for being incredibly glamorous at all times. This interview was conducted on the 18th Anniversary of Armen’s first theremin.

In January of 1959, 9 hikers mysteriously perished on the frigid slopes of Ural Mountains in Russia. To this day, no one knows what killed them. In part 2, we discuss the the theories put forth over the years as to what happened to the hikers.

This week on Necromancy Radio we chatted with Sweeney Deville, the guitarist from the band The Killbrides. Based in Birmingham, England, The Killbrides have been working together since their first experimental release early 2016, Traditional Ash. They met via Facebook, as Sweeney and Jamie had both been in different projects, Sweeney from The Acid Ballet and Jamie being influenced by emo punk sounds of the early 2000’s. Their interests are a combination of The Cure and Sisters of Mercy with a lot of screamo in there as well. It’s a bizarre combination, however their signature sound is unique. Expect pockets of darkness combined with a softness every now and then to relieve the hardcore sounds they create. You can follow them and Sweeney in links below.

Rose Sinister:Vampires concludes its first season with the second half of the Dracula season finale two-parter. In this episode, the historical Vlad Dracula is examined, both as a source of inspiration for Bram Stoker, but also for the filmmakers creating Dracula adaptations across the 20th century and into the 21st. What role does religion play in understanding the life and legacy of Dracula, both historic and fictional? And what does the ebb and flow of religiosity in cinematic Dracula entries communicate about larger cultural patterns across that period of time?

Archaeologists have found many unusual graves throughout Eastern Europe, graves in which stakes have been driven through the deceased's body. These burials, and the historical documents from the time, suggest that these individuals were suspected of being vampires by those that buried them. They are known as Vampire Burials, and in this episode, we explore exactly what was at stake.

The latest installment of Rose Sinister: Vampires is a deeply personal reflection on a vampire story that had a huge impact on my life- and why sometimes, revisiting the magic of our youth can challenge us to re-examine the stories that shape us. One of the best, and most disturbing, vampire novels ever written, Poppy Z. Brite's shocking 1992 novel, Lost Souls has had a huge impact on the lives of many of its readers. It's not a novel for the faint of heart, and while this episode isn't explicit, it does come with a content warning for disturbing subject matter and, of course, spoilers. I'm particularly interested to know what your thoughts on this novel are, if you read it when you were young, and if you've re-read it as an adult.
