This week we are going to be discussing goth music, but more interestingly those sites of liminality and ambiguity where what we’ve come to know as goth music collides and makes love to pop and indie music. What effect has that had on culture and clubs both historically and today, and what does this mean for the future of the genre?

In recent years we've seen an explosion of hard to classify acts that skirt the edge of goth culture and sound, bands such as chelsea wolfe, king dude, zola jesus, them are us too, cult of youth, Savages, Austra and so on. Do these bands mirror the sort of early 80’s melting pot of goth, synthpop, glam rock, new wave, deathrock etc, Are we just seeing Indie bands taking on a darker yolk, or are we seeing some new form of “art goth”, or perhaps an eschewing of genre classifications in general?

Our guest this month was Joshua, please check out his music project Gevatter Tod!

While Hallie moves and gets settled, please enjoy this fantastic psychological story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

Trigger Warning: This story depicts the point of view of a person suffering from mental illness (post-natal depression and anxiety). The 'treatment' standard for the time and the lack of support by family and friends worsens this condition over the period covered in the story.

If you need a jumpstart on Gothic films, along with a bit of info on what goes into them, this one's for you!

Feb 15, 2018

Many of you have noticed the lack of content from me over the past few months due to family illness. While I don't have the time at the movement to create new episodes, I can reach way back into the archives to some of my original shows, some of the best episodes of The Requiem, and share them with you.

This episode comes out of my time on the Faction 6 podcast, and the episode is a audio representation of a descent into madness, the journey from joyful bliss to full mental breakdown, something that's been a theme in my life the past year. I hope you enjoy. Here is the text from the original post:

Midnight Mass is a monthly Goth/industrial podcast mixed byDJ Count. You will hear an infusion of atmosphere, ambiance, and a theme into each mix. Therefore, it is not just music, but an experience. The idea behind Midnight Mass is this; a gathering of all the black sheep, the rejected, the neglected. Conjoining together, “in black communion. Beneath the glow of the moon, and upon the graves of the dead.” This show is best enjoyed after sunset.

Episode 4 (The Descent)
For this episode of Midnight Mass, we embark on a journey into the most secretive and depraved underworlds of society. I will lead you from the glorious heights of the human race (EBM/Future pop) into a gradual downward spiral through pain and desolation (Helektro/Terror EBM) until our final destination, the abyss. (Noize/total chaos)

Today's episode is about the importance of the post-punk movement to the gothic subculture. I'm including the start, the sound, and the death of the movement, but I encourage you to read Rip it Up and Start Again: The Messy History of Post PUnk if you want a more in-depth read on the major influences.
