--------------------------------
from the anthology Dark Divinations edited by Naching T. Kassa
It's the height of Queen Victoria's rule. Fog swirls in the gas-lit streets, while in the parlor, hands are linked. Pale and expectant faces gaze upon a woman, her eyes closed and shoulders slumped. The medium speaks, her tone hollow and inhuman. The seance has begun.
Join us as we explore fourteen frightening tales of Victorian horror, each centered around a method of divination. Can the reading of tea leaves influence the future? Can dreams keep a soldier from death in the Crimea? Can a pocket watch foretell a deadly family curse? From entrail reading and fortune-telling machines to prophetic spiders and voodoo spells, sometimes the future is better left unknown.
Choose your fate.
Choose your DARK DIVINATION.
With stories by: Stephanie Ellis, Hannah Hulbert, Daphne Strasert, Ash Hartwell, R.L. Merrill, Alan Fisher, Michael Fassbender, Joe L. Murr, Naching T. Kassa, Emerian Rich, Jon O'Bergh, Rie Sheridan Rose, Jeremy Megarge, and HRR Gorman

As we sit around our ornately carved table dripping in crushed velvet as we discuss Marilyn Manson, Big Dick Goth Boyfriends, and whether or not the ocean is soup.

At journey's end, our doom-laden dreamers contemplate the fate of goth at the passing of its first golden age. With the big names gone or ploughing very different furrows, how did the faithful keep the flame of darkness burning? By creating a club scene and by forming their own bands in the underground indie scene. Stuart, guest contributor for this week, shares his first-hand knowledge of this scene, showing how it fulfilled the need to keep the shadows dancing, keeping the space of creative suffering open for all who feel compelled to travel the gloomy dominions of the human soul.

Finally, our misbegotten heroes arrive at their final podcast, calling upon a special guest to help them explore the fate of goth and alternative in the 1990s. Stuart collaborated with both Nick and Simon in their far-from-legendary bands, and went on to rack up a tour of duty as guitarist for bona fide goth success Children on Stun, after founding member Simon Manning sadly shuffled off this mortal coil. Paying tribute to Simon and charting the persistence of goth in its more underground forms throughout the lean 90s, our trio of miserabilists celebrate the undying appeal of the music and culture of the shadows.

Year: 1991
Albums: Odds 'n' sods, one-hit wonders, outliers & honourable mentions
Continuing their grab-bag of oddities and outlier tracks, our diminutive weirdos hold up Flesh for Lulu, Leonard Cohen and, dare I say it, even a track by Ultravox for special mention. In the stories of their lives, the year of 1991 saw dreams begin to fade and new ideas take their place, as the horizons of adulthood loomed more solidly into view.

This month, Arcane Machine celebrates two milestones: our 1 year anniversary, and the close of one of the most terrifying years in modern history. It’s been a crazy journey! Fortunately, while there’s a lot of 2020 content we’d like to forget, there was also a ton of incredible music put forth by goth and industrial artists. So starting an Arcane Machine January tradition, Justin and Ed will celebrate their podcast birthday by looking back at the previous year’s music and picking some of their favorites. Please enjoy some new music by AM faves like Rotersand and Der Prosector, along with newcomers like The Kentucky Vampires and Night Club. Send your listener submissions/ suggestions to arcanemachinepodcast@gmail.com!

Our trad-goth raggedy men turn their attention to that miscellany of one-off favourites that helped complete their constellation of beloved goth and alternative tracks. From unsigned bands with nothing to lose, to uncharacteristically dark offerings from otherwise uncool mainstream bands, the list is refreshing, revealing and not a little controversial.

Les Mystere de Voix Bulgares (4AD compilation)
Our nocturnal seekers of solace turn their thoughts to two very different albums, one a reverb-drenched rock-inflected anthemic classic, one an otherworldly choral journey thru the strangest recesses of the human soul. Along the way they find a (more or less) definitive answer to the question of the ages: what is goth?

Greetings Darklings! In this week's interview, Ken and Collin got the awesome opportunity to talk with Der Prosector, the electro-punk/industrial four-piece that recently dropped their single "Car Bomb" and remixes. Together via Zoom, the group talks about punk rock pasts, nerdy stuff like DC comics and sports, as well as what to expect from the group in the future.

In this episode, we discuss a biological phenomenon that has been mistaken for a supernatural experience for hundreds of years. People of the past believed demons, witches, or spirits were sitting on their chests while they slept, crushing them, but today this experience is known as sleep paralysis, and it's far more common than previously thought.
